History of the Band

Our history…

Kempston Concert Band was founded in 1972 in order to give wind and percussion players in North Bedfordshire an opportunity to perform together. From quite early on Terry Hext became the musical director, a role he continued until the beginning of 2006. In 1992 it was felt that a junior band was required and this was established under the directorship of Marion Hext, who also retired from the band at the beginning of 2006.

Following the retirement of the Hext’s, Gareth King, a former member of the band who had recently moved back into the area and re-joined the band, took over as musical director of both bands in 2005. In 2015, Gareth handed the junior band over to Hannah who was already a long standing member of the band.

Following the pandemic, the decision was made to join the bands and have 2 conductors to enable people to have more chance to play together and perform. The band are still going strong with fantastic support from our local community!

We are always happy to welcome new members of all ages, abilities and disciplines as we believe you can never have too many players!
